Traverse City Fun!

Dan and I took off to Traverse City, MI for the weekend to go on the wine tour and get out of Lafayette for a couple of days. The trip started off as a disaster on Friday. We drove up there in the pouring down rain, 6 hours to the Northern coast of MI. My allergies were driving me nuts! We got up there, and Dan headed to the hotel hot tub/pool, while I ran across the street to the Walgreen's. I got over there, and realized that the power was out at Walgreen's. It didn't take me long to realize that the power was out in the whole TOWN. Dan was locked in the pool, because the electronic swipe keys didn't work without power. Hey, at least he had his BlackBerry with him, he could text, email and take pictures of himself to pass the time! Ha! He finally got out of the pool, and although the power was out for 3 hours, it did eventually come back on, and we were able to go to eat and have a few drinks before it got too late.

In the midst of all this, my sister called to tell me that my mom was in the hospital. She had fallen in the back porch of their house in Twelve Mile, and broken her leg. Dad was in Puerto Rico traveling for work, and Elizabeth was 1.5 hours away with two babies. My brother-in-law ended up going to pick her up, and brought her back to my sister's house in Lafayette. What a mess!

Had dinner Friday night at the North Peak Brewing Company, where we indulged in some amazing bleu cheese, dried cherries and pecan dip, and reuben sandwiches. It was delicious. Dan indulged in some dark, seasonal beer from this brewery, but as I'm not much for brewery beer, I stuck to iced tea.

We got up the next morning and headed out for a drive, up the Northeastern shore, to see some beautiful scenery and a lighthouse. Then, off to the wineries for some wine tasting. We tried lots of different kinds of wine, and ended up bringing home about 10 bottles of different kinds. We're anxious to break into some of them and share!

Below are some pictures from our trip:

The lighthouse. Not exactly what we pictured, but it was really neat to go up in it and see. The lighthouse was actually built INTO the house.

As you can see, it's a REALLY tight squeeze to get up there. Very narrow ladder, and not much room up at the top.

The view from the top.

There were definitely some unique tree formations up there, too.

This one was right outside the lighthouse. Really neat branches all the way up the tree, they were curved upwards, with leaves only on the ends of them.

This was at the Black Star Farms winery. They were the only winery that had their vineyard draped with mesh cloths. We're guessing to protect the grapes from either bugs, or frost, or both. ?? No one really gave us a clear answer on that. It was a pretty sight, though!

This was taken at the Ciccione winery, where Madonna's father is the vinter. MUAH!
My co-worker, Dave, and his lovely wife, Jess, got married here!

If you've ever been to a store (Meijer sells it) and seen wine bottled with Madonna's picture on the label, it is made in Leelanau, MI. It's a beautiful winery, and although a little expensive, the ambiance there is great! Wine wasn't of my liking (they only make dry wine), but Dan indulged in some. In case you didn't gather, the guy drinks pretty much anything. :)

This was also at the Ciccione winery, he was having a flight at the bar there.

This was at the Shady Creek winery. Beautiful scenery in the background, you can see Lake Michigan pretty clearly in the background.

The trees were all changing, and the fall colors were absolutely gorgeous! :)

At another winery (I don't remember the name.....we went to about 8 different ones!). They had a patio out back that you could sample a flight of wines, complete with your choice of cheeses and crackers. Probably some of my favorite wine. We bought a couple bottles there. "Serenity" was the name of my choice.

Another view from the car.

We went bar-hopping downtown Traverse City that evening. The table that we chose to sit at had a hanging bat (in honor or Halloween) hanging right by Dan's head. He got the pleasure of staring this guy in the face all night long. We parked the car in a parking garage that night, and took a cab home. Dan graciously offered to jog to the car the following morning to retrieve it. He got about 3 miles into his run, realized it was further than he thought, and decided that perhaps a 5+ mile run the morning after doing a wine tour probably wasn't something he wanted to do again.
We had a great weekend, in spite of all the drama on Friday, and would definitely recommend going there to anyone interested!! :-) If you'd like more details, get with me, and I'll send you some info. My co-worker Dave has been there lots of times, and knows all the great places to visit. Thanks for all the great recommendations, Dave! Much appreciated!

Pumpkin Carving!!

My sister had everyone and their kids over to her house last weekend for the kids to carve pumpkins. It's amazing to me how many of our friends now have little ones. :) Elizabeth had just given birth a couple of weeks prior, so she was most definitely a saint in having everyone come over and not only mess up her house, but mess it up with pumpkin guts! :) Here's a few pictures. Everyone had fun!

Gretchen and her cutie Corbin, and Trevor. Corbin LOVED Trevor, and hung on to him the whole time Trevor was carving his punkin'.... :)

What a huge mess. Olivia wasn't sure what to think. Initially, she wanted to "get messy" like Alex (the naked baby), but changed her mind quickly, after realizing that the stuff was "wet and icky".......she's a girly girl. And I'm not complaining.

Adults can have fun carving pumpkins, too! :)

Gretchen and Corbin
Dan and Natalie. That's Jeremy and Julie's baby. Dan couldn't STAND it. She was napping peacefully in her car seat for the majority of the time that she was there. Just as he was about to go to work, he just HAD to get her out of her seat so he could hold her. She had on such a cute Halloween outfit, and although you can't see it in this picture, the baby has absolutely the CUTEST hair.....dark and soft and fuzzy. And a lot of it! :) She's adorable!

Olivia and her boyfriend, Kyler Lowe. Yeah. They're pretty cute. They're going to have beautiful kids. OK, maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit here......but they are pretty stinkin' cute! :)

Merry Thanksgivoween!!!

I'm sure most of you probably know, I LOVE the holidays. I love the fall, all the way through to New Years. I saw this picture today, and thought it was a perfect idea. We should make the holidays a continuous, 4-month long celebration. :) I think I should get "holiday" from work, too! :) Don't you?

Pumpkin Patch

Dan and I took Olivia to the Pumpkin Patch this weekend to pick out her pumpkins to carve on Saturday night. (Which was a flop, since she thought the pumpkin guts were "yucky", and didn't want to touch it.) However, she did have fun at the pumpkin patch. Here's a bunch of pictures:

They had a petting zoo there, with all kinds of different animals. She liked the horse.

She wasn't quite as fond of the little pedal tractor, however. She was pouting here.

THEN, she got to ride the horsie. Since she was kinda' pouting around, we thought that she wouldn't like it, but she LOVED it. She had a BLAST on the horse. It was sooo cute. She patted it and petted it, and giggled the whole time that she was riding it. His name was Mr. Ed, which she told everyone. (Although it sounded more like, "Mrs. F" if you ask my mom.)

Dan walked with her while she was on the pony, too!

She was trying to pick out which little pumpkin she wanted. She changed her mind about 100 times. First, she wanted a white one, then an orange one, then she wanted two, then she wanted a different one. she had different ideas than Titi did. I'm pointing at one thing, and she's pointing at another. :) Ha!

She played in the sandbox filled with corn. They had little tractors there and little people. She kept burying the little guy, and saying, "WHERE DID HE GO??"

She was picking out small pumpkins out of the bin. She was almost too short, and they were almost too heavy for her, but she managed to find two of them that she wanted. One for Gage, and one for Bogey, she says. :)

Uncle Danny put her in the wagon with the pumpkins and pulled her back to the car. She liked that part, too. :)

AND, they had a playground that she could play on. Of course, she wanted to swing and play on all the toys.

They'll take your picture on the straw bales. The three of us. :)

AND, she called Nana on the way home in the car to say really loudly 4 times, "I RODE A PONY!" She was pretty proud.
We had a great time, it was a lot of fun! I look forward to taking her again next year.
Thanks for the recommendation, Christina!

School Lunch

We went to Scotty's for lunch today.....this is how Dan's lunch came out. School lunch style. The picture is a cell phone picture, so it's a little blurry, but what you're looking at is cheese pizza, waffle fries, cole slaw, applesauce, and some chocolate cup with peanut butter dessert in it. ?? All on a bright blue lunch tray. :) Ha!

Dave Letterman at Taco Bell

It's been a while since I posted something......been busy busy busy!! :)
Our friend Tiffany sent me a video today, and it made my freakin' day! I sat at my desk and laughed outloud. I'm not a HUGE Dave Letterman fan, but this video was GREAT! THANK YOU TIFFANY!! :) Check it out!!

McDonalds Monopoly

A short while ago, someone asked me what Dan couldn't live without. I thought about it, and had to give two answers. His BlackBerry, and McDonalds.

He's obsessed with his BlackBerry, and has become a text and email junkie. It's pretty much glued to his hand, to be quite honest. He emails and texts while driving, eating, watching t.v., and most recently, he sent me a text while he was in the shower. Really.

And as for McDonalds, he has almost a daily stop there to endulge in a Mickey D's Sweet Tea, and a Double Cheeseburger. It's cheap. Two bucks. So unhealthy, but irresistible. :)

This morning, as I passed McDonalds, and saw the sign announcing that McDonald's Monopoly was back, I sent him a text (ok, so I'm not much better, I won't lie) and told him. He responded. It said,

"I KNOW! :) Please save your code. I have the Monopoly game synced with my BlackBerry. I can enter the codes on my phone. Seriously. :)"
Dan is pretty stinkin' cute, you know. :)

Playing God....

This guy has parvo. The owners have no money to hospitalize or treat. Without, the survival chances are about 3 percent...Sometimes I wonder who gave me the power to "play God". To take a life. To intervene. Then I look at it as I am alleviating suffering. Mom is walking out in tears right now, but in about five minutes he won't be in any more pain. The joyful side of medicine. Just wait until humans have this choice......

Dr. Dan

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Beltran

Went to a wedding last night of my friend and "boss" Christopher. He and Sonia were married in Indianapolis at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and had their reception at the Montage. It was a truly amazing evening. All the way down to the fireworks at the reception, the ice sculptures EVERYWHERE, flowers, dinner and dancing. The wedding was truly beautiful, and the bride and groom were stunning. Congratulations to Christopher and Sonia. (They're enjoying the great weather in Maui right now......LUCKY!)

Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Beltran

Lee tore up the dance floor.....

Dan and I watched. (He's not much of a dancer.)

FORE!

We went golfing at Deer Track in Mulberry last week with Rick and Rhona. It was Rhona's first time out.....and she did great! It'll take her a bit to get the hang of it all, but she caught on quick, and didn't do too bad! We started after work, and yes, as the pictures depict at the end, it was dark when we finished. We didn't get a whole round in, but quit with just a few holes left. And it was COLD.....(hence Rick's blanket.) :) It was a great time. I can't wait to go again.

First hole....Rick and Rhona
Dan and I

Rick wrapped up in the blue blankie. :) It was COLD!
And as you can see, dark, too. This was near the end. Good thing, b/c I think that was the last beer in my cooler! :)

Family on Friday

Grandmas love babies. They just do. Mine especially love my sister's kids. Mom and Dad came down to Elizabeth and Brent's house Friday night to see the new baby. Mom and Dad loaded up Grandma's van and brought all of them, Grandma Hinkle and Grandma Moss (both in their late 80's) and my Nannaw (who is 93), to Lafayette for the night. We got Arni's pizza and played with the kids and visited with them. It reminded me how blessed I am to have all three of my grandma's in my life, at 26 years old. All of my grandfathers have passed, but it makes my heart smile to know that the three of them have gotten to see Olivia and Gage, and enjoy them in their later years in life. They had a great time, and passed Gage around and oohed and aahed over him all night. I walked out of there smiling at how happy being with my family made me.

Olivia and Gage with Titi.....
Dan and Nannaw. Yep, she's 93, and will be 94 January 2. Doesn't she look amazing?

4 generations of the Moss family. My dad, my sister, Grandma Moss, and Elizabeth's kiddos, Livi and Gage.

Grandma Hinkle with Olivia and Gage. Olivia is particularly fond of Grandma Hinkle, for some reason. Grandma eats it up!

Dan and I with Olivia and Nannaw. Olivia was enjoying her "CHIPSSSS!" (Ranch Doritos)
Hug those you love today, everyone! Or call them, or send them a letter in the mail. Yes, that's right, I said send a LETTER in the MAIL. I send my grandmas a note, even if it's just a short little note to let them know I'm thinking of them, about once a week or every other week. Every time they see me, they tell me how much they enjoy the notes that I send, and how it often brightens their days. (I imagine that someday, when they're gone, we'll find a shoebox somewhere with all the notes, cards, and letters in it, stashed somewhere.) Just do it. You won't be sorry you took the extra time.

Baby Gage Goes Home!

Gage finally went home from the hospital. (Well, not finally. I'm a little late on this post.) He was resting so nicely, in his new outfit that Titi (and Dan) bought him. What a precious little guy. He has a much darker complexion than Olivia, and has darker hair than she did. I still can't get over his little hairy arms and back. He takes after his Daddy there! :)

Olivia seems to be getting along fine. She likes to hug and kiss Gage, and "pat" him, too. Elizabeth said that she tries to tickle him and says "Getcha getcha getcha". She's going to have to keep an eye on that, as Elizabeth said she was trying to do it to his face.

I picked up Olivia from daycare on Wednesday. I walked into the room, and she was standing in front of a refrigerator with her face pressed up against the side of it. I looked at her, and she had a soaking wet face, and had tears STREAMING down her cheeks. She had swollen eyes and her face was all flushed and pink. The daycare ladies said that she had been crying most of the day. She ran right over to me and lifted her arms. She wanted me to pick her up. I did, and she wrapped those little arms around my neck and squeezed as hard as she could, laid her head on my shoulder and just sobbed...... It broke my heart. I finally got her calmed down and said, "Guess who is waiting in the car?" She got a huge smile on her face, her eyes lit up really big, and she said, "DAN!!! Let's go see Dan! I want Dan!" It was soooo cute! She loves and adores him, and is always excited to see him!

She read her Dora book all the way home in the car, and Titi taught her a new word, "ARMADILLO" She said it a hundred times, and pronounced it very well, (although it came out as "Arrrrmmmm a dill yoah"). When we got home, she went right over to Gage's bassinet and patted him. Then, she wanted me to do everything for her. She wouldn't take cheese from her dad, because she "want Titi get it"......and she wouldn't let her mom change her pull up, she "wanted Titi change me"......Ha! It made me feel good again to know that she's still Titi's girl.

She makes my heart melt, and I'm sure that her brother will do the same someday.
